Changes Coming to Social Security in March 2025 - Details & Suggestions

Sandy Ingram here.  This YouTube channel is news information for U. S. ex-pats.  All news on this channel is verifiable.  I am a retired ex-pat, still registered with the IRS, traveling the world slowly.  At the time this video is uploaded,  I am in Acapulco, Mexico, for my annual doctor's visits.  Please do not tell the U.S. State Department, because this area has a "do not travel, Level four" attached to it.  But I got stuck in Acapulco during the pandemic, and since I couldn't leave, I came to know the city and adopted it as my hometown.     More on that at a later time.  Here is the important news that U.S. ex-pats around the globe may want to be aware of.

Since February 1, AARP has experienced a surge in calls—approximately 2,000 per week—from retirees expressing concerns about potential disruptions to their Social Security retirement benefits.  This uptick is double the usual call volume and is primarily driven by apprehensions over recent workforce reductions within the Social Security Administration (SSA) under the Trump administration.

These staffing cuts have led to significant customer service challenges.  In February, the average wait time for SSA phone assistance was about one hour and 44 minutes.  Additionally, the SSA has announced plans to require in-person identity verification for certain services, a move intended to combat fraud.

However, this change coincides with the closure of several SSA field offices, raising concerns about accessibility for seniors, especially those in remote areas or with limited mobility.

The SSA's acting commissioner, Leland Dudek, has implemented policies that include canceling research contracts and closing regional offices, further exacerbating service delivery issues.  Critics argue that these measures, purportedly aimed at reducing fraud, may instead lead to systemic challenges within the agency.

Approximately 73 million Americans receive Social Security benefits, with around 40% of older Americans relying solely on these monthly checks for their retirement income.  The combination of administrative changes and staffing reductions has heightened anxieties among retirees who depend on timely and consistent benefit payments.

Frank Bisignano, nominated to lead the SSA, has pledged to review the agency's computer systems and address concerns arising from recent policy changes.  He emphasized his commitment to ensuring that all beneficiaries receive their payments on time and stated that he has no plans to privatize the agency.

U.S. retirees are advised to stay informed about changes to SSA procedures and seek assistance from advocacy groups like AARP to navigate the evolving landscape of Social Security services.

One tip that the channel can offer is that if you need to change your bank account or any personal information on your social security account, you will most likely need to make an appointment and show up in person to verify any changes.

Most ex-pats utilize direct deposit into a U.S. Bank account and use their bank card via ATMs almost anywhere in the world for their daily transactions.  It's like being a day trader.  The cost of living for us depends on the currency exchange rate for the day of the transaction.

Most of us do extremely well making the U.S. dollar go much further.  It is not a lifestyle for everyone, but those of us who have embraced the digital nomad lifestyle live well on less, much less.
